A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (2003)

Director: Ji-Woon Kim

Synopsis: Two young sisters arrive at their home of their uncaring father and wicked new stepmother out in the country after their mother’s recent death. The girls must not only put up with the nastiness of the stepmom but also some ghostly things going on in the house.

My take: Of course, there is a Hollywood remake of this on the way, I'm sure it will be ruined. This film is honestly one of the creepiest movies I have seen in a long time, its not necessarily in-your-face scary, but the atmosphere of strange happenings in the house and the sisters’ coping with the cruelty of their stepmother makes for some interesting scenes. The story ends up being very challenging, as none of it is really what it seems. I’ve watched this one twice and I’m still not sure I got everything towards the ending. The biggest issue I have with the film are the moments when it thinks it is necessary to include cliché and cheesy stuff for shock value (the monster girl under the sink comes to mind) as these scenes have absolutely nothing to do with the story.

Favorite scene: The opening scene in the mental hospital where one of the sisters is being questioned by the doctor. So creepy…

Worst use of vomit: When the step-aunt has a seizure and vomits all over herself and her face keeps getting smeared in the vomit – that just wasn't necessary.
