NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE (2006)

Director: Shinya Tsukamoto

Synopsis: A bizarre series of suicides in Tokyo (people are killing themselves in their sleep) leads the detectives assigned to the case to use unorthodox methods to get to the bottom of things. They enlist the help of the ‘nightmare detective’, a suicidal guy who apparently has the power to enter into people’s dreams.

My take: The most mainstream outing yet from director Tsukamoto, who also stars as the film’s villain. It is a visually stunning film with a fairly strong story and some very interesting deaths. There are some slow parts in the script where the characters just wander around thinking about how they feel depressed and suicidal. From watching this, one would think that everyone in Tokyo is suicidal. But, things pick up towards the end with an intense climax and then a long, boring epilogue that paves the way for a sequel. Still, it is a very good movie. Oh, and the dubbed version is actually much better than the subtitled one, it makes a lot more sense.

Best death: The guy that slits his throat with a box cutter over and over and over while asleep with his wife in bed next to him. Very graphic and brutal, the image really sticks in your head.
