DEATH PROOF (2007)

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Synopsis: An old stuntman (wonderfully portrayed by Kurt Russell) stalks two sets of women on different occasions with his ‘death proof’ stunt car. Essentially, the movie consists of two long, typically Tarantino conversations between the groups of girls before ‘Stuntman Mike’ catches up with them. Done in the style of a 1970’s B-movie thriller, it includes fake grainy film and bad editing.

My take: Unlike the films this pays homage to, Death Proof actually has some merit to it. The dialogue centerpieces are amusing and they help develop the characters before putting them in danger. Tarantino masterfully blends many pop culture elements together into a sometimes suspenseful, frewuently humorous, and thoroughly entertaining movie. However, all of it is ruined by possibly the worst movie ending ever. After the tables are turned on him, Stuntman Mike gets beat down by the second set of girls and then “THE END” pops up on the screen. I wanted a little something more here.

Best Death: The girl getting her face erased by Mike’s spinning tire. Yummy.
